Atlanta Toys for Tots

Site Objective: The site objective was to give the Atlanta Toys for Tots web site a design overhaul. Also since the Atlanta chapter was branching out and somewhat managing broader territories it needed a way to “localize” their separate areas under one roof.

Development Specifications: In this case we decided to use WordPress MU, so that multiple sites could easily be added on that would give the full WordPress functionality but remain somewhat separate from the “master” brand. This way as new local organizations sprung up, we would easily be able to give them their own web site under the Atlanta T4T umbrella.

This site received it’s own custom theme that allowed for children blogs to re-use that theme but with their custom content.

This site also included a custom web application build that managed toy requests, drop sites, events, and volunteers. This back end system tied into the front end WordPress site through both collection of data through forms on the site as well as displaying data from the back end system through Google Maps on the WordPress powered site.

The Rev

Site Objective: The main objective of this site was a small redesign and using that opportunity to give the back end administrator more control over the content.

Development Specifications: This site is very graphic heavy so setting up the theme took a little more hand holding. The portfolio page integrated sub-pages and gallery functionality to manage the organization and presentation of the portfolio pieces. This also allowed for dynamic additions to this section so portfolio pieces could be easily added and maintained without disrupting the presentation.

Americare

Site Objective: The main purpose of the site was to redesign the current site, as well as give franchisees a solid branding structure. Due to franchisees being spread out in a branding and web presence sense, this redesign served the dual purpose of re-energizing the brand as well as bringing all franchisees under one roof.

Development Specifications: Development consisted of building the main themed pages, as well as blog functionality. Franchisees were also set up with access to their specific pages, and were incorporated with separately themed pages and content management structure. All under the WordPress roof.

One Million Smart Jobs

Site Objective: The objective was to build a basic site to get the provided message out. The main purpose was to provide a robust cms that could manage updates and changes to the existing content while also providing a blog for recent news and updates. The site was a bit of a rush, but with a great design with an eye towards producing it using WordPress turnaround was quick and easy with a beautiful result.

Development Specifications: Development consisted of building two main themed pages, as well as blog functionality, page sub navigation, custom queries, PHP programming, and JavaScript using JQuery.

Ask A Bachelor

Site Objective: The objective of this site was to provide a columnist a central place to host all of her columns that may be distributed through multiple magazines and newspapers. The goal was also to build an audience based around her brand specifically and have a way to build the community and interact with them better.

Site Specifications: The site was set up with a customized theme to reflect the Ask A Bachelor brand. Custom JavaScript and PHP was written to manage submissions for her article as well as general site interaction.

BTB Fitness

update: This site has been rebuilt since my original work

Site Objective: BTB Fitness is a boot camp style fitness company. They also provide CrossFit workouts in their gym. They needed to integrate a blog with their current site design to post updates and daily CrossFit workouts. Since the blog was not an original requirement of the site it was added on after the original site was completed. It was also a requirement of the client to use TypePad as the blog engine.

Site Specifications: The blog needed to take the look and feel of the current site but still retain the functionality and dynamic capabilities of a TypePad blog.

Development Specifications: Development consisted of building the theme for TypePad, and integrating new functionality into the theme. Domain mapping was also required, and the original site restructured to link to the correct categories for blog posts.

Hugs For Hackers

update: this site is no longer available since my original work

Site Objective: HugsForHackers.org was a viral site that AVG developed to be a compliment to their ad campaign that was running in tech magazines such as PC World and Wired. The site was very flash heavy, and a blog was required to give the characters more of an individual voice.

Site Specifications: The blog needed to take the look and feel of the current site but still retain the functionality and dynamic capabilities of a TypePad blog.

Development Specifications: Development consisted of building the theme for TypePad to reflect their site design. Domain mapping was also required, and the original site restructured to link to the correct categories for blog posts.

General Development

GetOutdoorsGeorgia.org

Site Objective: GetOutdoorsGeorgia.org was a Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites initiative to get people more involved in the state parks. It was designed to be sister site to the main State Parks site that gave users a way to get involved in the state parks system from an activities point of view. For example if you wanted to go fishing, in the current site you would need to know the park to go to, but in the new site you would be provided a list of parks that had that activity.

A strategic partner of the initiative was Google, so integration of Google Maps and Widgets was required.

Site Specifications: The site was built using classic ASP and Oracle as the database. A database was developed to house information about all of the 63 state parks and historic sites, activities at those parks, groups and programs at each site, as well as events.

The Google Maps API was used to locate parks, get directions from your location to the park, and display activities, groups and programs locations.

Development Specifications: Development consisted of:

  • designing and building the Oracle database
  • Building the site to display the data from the database on the site
  • Integrating Google Maps with the database to display location information as well as driving directions and interactive “Find a Park” functionality
  • Integrating third party newsletter signup into the site
  • Building contact forms to email administrators if people were interested in supporting the Get Outdoors initiative.

CrunkEnergyDrink.com

Site Objective: CRUNK!!! Energy Drink wanted a site that spoke to their brand and helped to get the word out about what CRUNK!!! was about and where you could get it. The site is very graphics and flash heavy and needed to provide visitors with information about what CRUNK!!! was made of, who drinks it, where you could find it, and what the brand believed in.

Site Specifications: To give users a way to find CRUNK!!! Google Maps was integrated with a MySql database of all the locations that sold CRUNK!!! energy drink. Users could enter their zip code and locations close to them would display on the map.

To develop CRUNK!!!s position as a supporter of music and sports a MySql database was built to house musician and athletes, information about them such as a bio, location, and links and categorized to group them with similar athletes or musicians. The database also housed a rating system so that users could rate artists and athletes.

CRUNK!!! also developed an application to build their “CRUNK!!! Army”. Called CRUNK!!! House, the site was set up to give users a way to join with CRUNK!!! and get points for doing things to promote the energy drink. Users could log on and see a list of promotional activities such as hanging a banner at a house party, or wearing CRUNK!!! gear at events. When a user completed an activity they submitted their Happening and uploaded photos and video. Administrators then reviewed the submissions and awarded points. The points could then be redeemed for CRUNK!!! schwag such as backpacks, hats, mp3 players, etc.

The CRUNK!!! House system was built on MySql and PHP. The database housed user profile information, submitted Happenings information, rewards, and activities that could earn points. The application tied all of this data together and gave users and administrators a way to view point totals, redeemed points, Happenings that needed to be approved, update user and activity information, and general management of accounts.

Development Specifications: Development for the CRUNK!!! site was very spread out due to shifting strategy and branding. Database development and integration for the main site took approximately 45 hours.

Using jQuery to make your designs more interactive

Most of my work entails taking flat Photoshop files and turning them into functioning interactive web sites. One of the bigger issues is I usually don’t know what the page is supposed to actually do. Falling back on a few years experience helps, and some stuff is pretty obvious (click here, go there), but most of the time I’d much rather be lazy and have someone just tell me what it needs to do.
